This waking dream technique is called RELEASING THE SHADOW

 

1) Meditate briefly on your Shadow `Type' (a broad brush, generalised description, see Jung’s Types on foregoing pages). As it starts to emerge, do you associate it with a particular feeling or state? Is it linked to a place in your body? Intensify and stay with those feelings. When did you first experience this during your life? What archetype or mythic image does it belong to?

 

2) Now let the image separate from your body and stand beside you. How big is it? What is it made of? What is its connection to your body?

 

3) Communicate with the Shadow. What does it do for you? Why did it emerge at that particular time in your life?

 

4) Now allow a spiritual mentor to stand beside you and your shadow. Let the mentor fill you with his/ her spiritual peace, wisdom and energy. And let them: a: Reveal to you a vision of your higher self (what you will be like as a completely evolved spiritual being). b: Explain how the Shadow will be incorporated in that Self. c: Tell what the Shadow's role will be in your evolution. d: Reveal the precise, concrete, steps by which your evolution will occur. IMPORTANT: The Higher Self must include the archetypal functions, purposes, needs and intentions of the Shadow as you learnt during step 3).

 

5) Step into the Higher self for a few moments and realise the joy, wisdom, grace and humour, love and opportunities lying in wait for you as you evolve.

 

6) Now ask the Shadow to merge with the Higher Self. Remind it that the new Self fulfils its needs and intentions in every way, and that the merger will be a completion of its divine function. N.B. The Shadow may wish to remain separate. If so respect its wishes and offer it the opportunity to return to the Source from which it came. If it wishes to remain attached to you, then negotiate its reasons, time needed, learning's left to do, and secure its continued co-operation in evolving your Higher Self. Then let the Shadow return to wherever it has chosen to go.

 

7) Once Shadow has merged with Higher Self (possibly not on first attempt of this exercise) then step into the Higher Self. Re associate to it, and see, hear, feel connection with it. Wait for a few moments while your Higher Self integrates with your body and provides you with an important spiritual message. This might concern either people around you, in your personal or professional life &c.

This self-hypnosis exercise is based on one I learnt during 7 years of  Ericksonian training and professional practice. I observed phenomena over time which correlated more with Jungian theory, and got better results than with hypnotherapy, so now this is my main therapeutic approach.
